John Keells Foundation commemorated World Teacher’s Day by organizing a Teacher Training workshop on the 8th of October at Cinnamon Lakeside for teachers from our Neighbourhood Schools Development Project. Over the last decade, John Keells Foundation has been conducting programmes for the Neighbourhood School projects towards creating a conducive environment for learning and improving the facilities and infrastructure available, amounting to an investment over Rs. 17 million rupees.
The programme was conducted with the support of the Zonal Education Office, whom also awarded Ms. M. Ubeysiri from Al Iqbal Muslim Balika Vidyalaya as the ‘Best Performing Teacher’ . A special award was also given by John Keells Foundation Ms. R. Najeeb Deen, principal of Al Iqbal Maha Vidyalaya for her tireless commitment and support towards our Neighbourhood Schools Development Project. Topics covered during the full day programme included soft skills, social skills, team work, learning styles and factors influencing learning conducted by Ms. Hasini Gajadeera, Head – Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Gateway Graduate School , while internet and social media opportunities and challenges was conducted by members of the John Keells Digitisation Committee, Dr. Muditha Senerath – Yapa and Nadeem Shums. Ms. Nayana Karunaratne from Image Consultants conducted a session on personal grooming & social etiquette, while Mr. R. Wijesinghe from the Zonal Education office conducted a session on the basics of counselling and government regulations relating to Teachers. The programme was attended by 87 teachers and principals from five of the disadvantaged government schools supported by John Keells Foundation, Al Iqbal Muslim Balika Vidyalaya, Holy Rosary Tamil Vidyalaya, Holy Rosary Sinhala Vidyalaya, Siri Sariputta Maha Vidyalaya and T.B. Jayah Maha Vidyalaya.
