John Keells Foundation initiated phase 3 under Science Day Programme (SDP) in collaboration with Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science in Ampara and Monaragala on the 6th and 7th of July respectively. The initiative is aimed at promoting science amongst school children of six underserved districts for three consecutive years, towards increasing the intake of students in the science stream for their Ordinary Level Examinations. 162 students and 10 teachers from 09 schools participated in the Programme held at D. S. Senanayaka College, Ampara and 174 students and 10 teachers from 09 schools participated in the programme held at Public Library Auditorium, Monaragala. Under Phase 3, a new practical component was introduced whereby students were taught through experiential learning as they received hands-on learning and practice in coding robots. Participation from the students was very good with many of them seeing robots for the first time, appreciating the complexity and mechanics behind it through the application of science theory. A part from the robotic demonstration and coding, a panel discussion on career prospects and the benefits of pursuing science, a poster competition on epidemics and a quiz was conducted.
