On the 23rd and 24th of April, John Keells Foundation in collaboration with Asia Foundation conducted a two-day programme on gender sensitivity and communication skills in Puthukkudiyiruppu(PTK) police station in the Mullaitivu District for 29 and 20 police officers respectively. The programme followed phase one which supported sensitive and effective police response at the Women and Children’s Desk(WCD), Puthukudiyiruppu Police Station by creating a space that was appropriate for women and children, and the implementation of gender sensitivity training for police officers at the WCD and the community. The police officers were encouraged to carry out the community awareness programmes towards creating trust and rapport with community members. The second phase involved a continuation of this programme, mainly targeting police officers communication skills and the importance of non-verbal behavior including body language, gestures and eye contact, equipping police officers not only with the knowledge and skills, but an appreciation on the approach and soft skills required to handling gender-based violence and child abuse issues sensitively and effectively. Police officers who had not previously attended phase one were also offered gender sensitivity training.
