John Keells Foundation (JKF) has been supporting the lives and livelihoods of villagers in Mangalagama since 2010. The cashew sourcing initiative via Ceylon Cold Stores continued to face setbacks in terms of inability to agree on a price. Taking into account the general state of development in Mangalagama and the limited scope for further interventions, it was decided to discontinue the Foundation’s engagement in the village.
Over the past few years, the following activities were conducted:
1. Facilitating access to clean and safe water e.g. construction of tank
2. Infrastructure development and support for schools and preschool
3. Establishing women’s society
4. Capacity building including sewing classes, dress making etc.
5. Developing livelihoods via Farmer Society e.g. Creating market linkages with Ceylon Cold stores on Cashew Farming
6. Higher education scholarships for youth
